Mimicry is a project that explores the hybridization of plants and insects through the lens of AI. It imagines fantastical hybrid creatures born from horizontal gene transfer, having at its core the exploration of new evolutionary strategies, such as exaptation and mimicry, for a planet in ecological transformation.
Inspired by the digital collection of Mimicry, the piece features insects and elements drawn from three biomes on the verge of ecological transformation, staging hybrid creatures that carry traits from both the plant and insect kingdoms as they shift and adapt across these changing environments.
Technically, these works have been created while experimenting with a pipeline combining text-to-image and image-to-image processes. The botanical forms are generated in continuity with Unseen Flora, previously created with real plant clades and their morphological features as prompts. These images are then reinterpreted through a curated archive of entomological illustrations, giving them insect-like qualities, before a second image-to-image pass blends further traits from both kingdoms, with text prompts guiding the evolution of specific features such as segmented limbs, wings, or exoskeletal textures.
