Snowfall

Snowfall is one of the earliest artistic installations realized by the studio. First exhibited at Palazzo Santa Margherita in Modena in 2009, just 1 year after the creation of the studio in 2008, the work puts forward a number of techniques very innovative for the time, such as artificial viewing techniques and real-time interactions. These features have also anticipated means of artistic expression and interaction later employed in several works of the studio.

The system at the basis of Snowfall processes the images captured in real-time by a number of video cameras placed in the space, determining the silhouettes of visitors and blocking the fall of snowflakes on the shadows that people project onto the wall. In 2009, sensors as we know them today were still not present on the market, therefore the very first version of Snowfall was realized using infrared cameras. The installation was featured in 2010 at the finals of the Celeste Prize, displaying the work at the Brodbeck Foundation in Catania (IT).

In 2015, for the “Right Here, Right Now” exhibition at The Lowry in Manchester (UK), the installation underwent a complete reworking thanks to the updated hardware and software. With more modern tools, the interaction techniques are improved, resulting in a cleaner experience. Another important element that gets added to the piece is sound design, with an audio soundscape allowing for a deeper immersion in the piece.

Snowfall has been included in the studio solo show “Everything in Existence” at Artechouse, in 2019. For the occasion, the piece has undergone some minor improvements in order to adapt its content to a 4K resolution. Thanks to the upgrade, we have been able to add new details to the visitors’ silhouettes, in particular to their facial features.
