Trust is a body of works exploring the multiple meanings and implications of trust. The series was first commissioned by Artechouse on the occasion of the studio’s solo show in their New York City gallery in the first half of 2022.
Artechouse has been an important partner in the studio’s journey, allowing us to realise our first solo exhibition in the United States back in 2019. With three permanent locations (Washington DC, Miami and New York), Artechouse has supported the creation of significant works of experiential and immersive art along the years, also thanks to the potential offered by their immersive galleries - a constant of all three locations.
On the occasion of Trust, our first experience in the New York City gallery, the space was subdivided into various sections, in order to offer the audience a multifaceted experience that could allow for an enhanced comprehension of the theme. We were aware that the concept of trust can be explored from different perspectives, and it was vital to create distinct areas where we could delve into different aspects of the theme, aiming to engage the audience on a more personal and empathic level.
The gallery’s layout, with additional rooms and sections, allowed us to incorporate smaller, more compact audiovisual pieces alongside the main immersive work. This enabled us to include three additional pieces in the exhibition, each exploring the concept of trust across different time horizons, enriching the overall experience and providing deeper insights into our interpretation of trust.
The immersion gallery housed Trust, the immersive site-specific work that represented the heart of the exhibition. The experience, composed of three main chapters, is characterised by a succession of audiovisual atmospheres that evolve following the trend of trust over time. The entire installation continuously recreates itself through custom software that analyses in real-time the combination of financial data in relation to the index of trust. The audiovisual content of the piece is always connected to this live stream of data, which in turn impacts how point clouds interact and reorganise themselves.
In the Mezzanine West, visitors can experience and visualise the core process guiding all installations through Trust [Atlas]. The work unveils the data that represent the core of the works: together with showing a continuous generation of possible futures proposed by a recurrent neural network, the work focuses on past events and trends of trust over the past 100 years. Thus, the work allows us to intersect and put both data in perspective, highlighting possible correlations and divergences.
Another component of the show is Trust [Fragments], exhibited in dialogue with the immersive installation. This real-time installation explores the dimension of the present, collecting and analysing real-time data from Bitcoin blockchain transactions and shared tweets.
Lastly, the Mezzanine Gallery houses Trust [Future Archive], an audiovisual installation exploring a series of possible futures generated by the main prediction algorithm. This section of the show offers a view into the future, displaying an archive-like of potential outlooks on society.
