One of the most important presentations of our Artificial Botany series is the solo show “Mutamenti. Le metamorfosi sintetiche di fuse* and Francesca Pasquali” held at CUBO Unipol in Bologna (IT) in the first half of 2022.

The solo exhibition, curated by Federica Patti, presented an extensive exploration of Artificial Botany and its intersection between botanical illustrations and machine learning algorithms. The show featured a comprehensive selection of works by the studio to highlight the multifaceted research and its many outputs, also spanning different and various mediums. In fact, the exhibition path included a diverse range of media, from analogue prints to video installations and soundscapes.
A central component was the introduction of new works based on the illustrations of Ulisse Aldrovandi, a famous botanist and Bolognese naturalist recognized by many as the father of modern Natural History. Thanks to the concession by BUB (University Library of Bologna), the Botanical Garden of Bologna and Alma Mater Studiorum, of some datasets of high-resolution images of the illustrated herbarium and the dry herbarium by Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522 - 1605), the exhibition has included a few new pieces based on this new visual narration.
Included in the show was also Artificial Botany .herbarium, which showcases a dynamic matrix of 1,296 Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that continuously transform and reinterpret botanical illustrations. This work is the visual representation of the evolving nature of stylistic and aesthetic interpretations within the realm of botanical art.
